So I'm not always a fan of writing all about myself but if I'm going to be posting things on a blog for other people to read then you going to need to know about Junior Victor Russell Bester. I live in Strandfontein and I am 26 years old. By day I'm the cricket writer at the Cape Argus and by night I'm a fun loving guy that loves chilling with my friends, clubbing and watching anything to do with sport. Some people describe me as a sport nut but I just simply say that I am a sport fan. I love all sports, except basketball just because you can't really defend. However i am watching it just in case one day i change my mind. I know basketball are some of the finest athletes in the world and the games are exciting so there is hope :) I love cricket and rugby but my first love is football, since a young age I have spent hours in front of a television watching football and I spent just as much time reading newspaper articles and websites about the sport. Since I was eight years old I became a full pledge Manchester United fan.
The day: 11 May 1996 My oldest brother Vicky is a Liverpool fan and my second eldest brother, Russell, is a Manchester United fan, so with them being 13 and 10 years older than me respectively I had to watch both teams play on a regular basis. So on this day I decided which team I was going to choose. Both teams made it to the FA Cup final at Wembly and while I had my favourite players from each team one man sttod out for me. That was Manchester United's legendary forward Eric Cantona. When the game started I told my family that this game would decide it, then with five minutes left of normal play Cantona pick the ball up a few yards away from the halfway line and unleashed a ferocious shot that flew into the net. I celebrated madly but what made me a Man U fan was Cantona's celebration: He simply raised his hands in the sky and soaked in the applause from the fans and the fellow players. From that day on I was a Red Devil. Growing up my dream was always to be involved with sport, since I was no good at playing a sport the dream of being an athlete was put aside and I decided that broadcasting would be my destination. It took me a while (studying BCom for four years before going into journalism) but I finally got to be where I wanted to be when i became the cricket writer at the Cape Argus last year June. The reason why I was drawn to journalism was the fact that it gave me the chance to learn about people and the way things truly affect them. I believe that the main aim for any journalist is to be the storyteller for your community. To uncover information for the sake of your community and then tell them the story so that they can be more informed and also feel more involved. So that is my story, yes I spoke mostly about sport yet that is my passion. Enjoy :)
